summary of my past posts! music style?

 In the past few weeks, I introduce some music style to everyone, including me!  Every single post, I search datas on my own and use my own language to show you what this kind of music style should be.  So, every post about features or feelings about a singe music style includes others insight of it and my own feelings! Sometimes I have totally different feelings with what others say on the Internet, which had me think more thoroughly about this kind of style. It also shows that the word "style" is decided by people themselves. Although we listen to the same song, we do have different feeling about. Maybe you think it's a sad song, while I think it tells a story about happiness. In conclusion, for the introductions I posted, they just provide you a kind of method to distinguish lots of music. That means, you can establish your own standard to a set of music style depend on your feelings, though there may be a little will agree with you haha!

 At the end of my final post, I also post my songs to you guys!

math rock!

Yeah! I am going to describe what is math rock! So, as what it's called, it is very "math" as a kind of music. It constantly change it's tempo and speed to create a new feeling. Sounds weird? Yes, it's really hard to accept this kind of music when you first listen to these songs, so am I hahaha. But if you pay more attention to listen to it, you will find they have their reason to do this strange things, because they still want people to appreciate their songs!
It's hard to tell you that how to appreciate this kind of songs, so let's try some "weird" songs!!!

Before we start to listen, in Asia, there are lots of amazing math rock band deserve you listen to it!

Electronicore music!

Today I am going to tell you an amazing music style called Electronicore(電扣). Trough its name, we can clearly know that it's the combination of metal core and electronic music. Sounds very distinctive right? It's features are also very easy to tell. It has metal core's features : break down and screamed voice, and also clean voice. The difference between electronicore and metal core is that it use that of electronic elements in it's songs. It use  synthesizer(合成器) to create lots of distinguish sound that traditional instrument can't make it, making songs become more interesting and grooving. With these two straightforward features, it's not surprise to know that eletronicore is very popular in the rock music.

Grunge Rock !

So, this week I am going to talk about Grunge Rock(油漬搖滾). It's called grunge because in this kind of songs, their songs usually have "dirty" guitar sound. Yes, very dirty in contrast to the clean tone. The adjective dirty means that guitarists use lots of gain to make it sounds like "沙沙沙",  and we describe this sound as dirty sound.

The features of grunge rock can be concluded to the following points. First, it often in slow temple, despite that they originally came from punk rock, which is a fast speed music. Second, in it's lyric, there are lots of negative words, related to writers' anger, sadness, or something antiestablishment.
When you listen to grunge rock music, you can feel their strong emotions. That is why grunge rock is so charming,  it's easy for me to fall into their story and cry as I listen their songs.

Nickelback is my favorite grunge rock band, I recommend the to you.

music style - metalcore

This kind of music is a genre of extreme metal and hardcore punk, and it put more emphasis on break down, which means a slow and intense passages in a song.

It's characteristic can be described in different aspects. First, in vocals, it's usually use screamed vocals,or use it with clean voice, usually in the bridge of a song, and screamed vocal in the main song and break down, creating different feelings and grooving. Second, in instrumental aspects, drummers often use double bass(雙踏) to create a heavy groove and powerful feelings. Other bands may also add lots of melody in their songs, also called melodic metal core (旋律金屬核). This kind of bands include "As I Lay Dying", "Dead By April", "Bullet For My Valentines". In ideology, because there are lots of christian metal core bands, the lyric often related to their  religion, such as "the Devil Wears Prada".

In this songs, it's clear that you can hear their vocalist use scream voice and clean voice in turn in different patterns.

Punk rock this week!

This week is Punk rock week! So I am going to let you know what is Punk rock!

Punk, in Chinese we call it "龐克". It originates from punk culture, which often related to  antiestablishment(反社會原則). Telling the popular that someone still need help ant the world is not as happy as the the popular see; too much people's cry are hidden behind the TV.

The features of Punk rock are that Punk band usually make fast pace songs with hard-edged melodies and political, antiestablishment lyrics. The meaning in their songs related to many aspect of social problems, including war, economic inequality, bully, environment protection, and so on. They use their songs to let people know the social problems.

Take "Rise Against", a punk band from Chicago, for example. In their album "Endgame" ,they discuss the Iraq War, unequal treatment to homosexual group, or even the tragedy caused by Hurricane Katrina. 

When you listen punk rock music, hope you can enjoy it and at the same time listen what they want to tell you.

The beauty of speed and guitar : Power Metal !

   Before I  am going to talk about this style, I am sure that the word "metal" in your minds are bands with a growing vocalist(嘶吼主唱). But not all metal style prefer to this kind of vocalist, for example, power metal!  In power metal music, they prefer "clean" vocalists(清腔). And most of this kind of singers have wide range of vocal!
   Power metal music has some features that are easy to tell. First, they are usually with fast tempo, giving listeners the feeling of strong "power". Second, today power metal bands often have their performance with a orchestra playing behind them. So in their songs you can hear multiple kind of sound, creating  dramatic, emotional feelings! Last but not the least, the guitar solo! In power metal, their guitarists are abnormally skillful,which always create fantastic, amazing solo, and become the most appreciable point in a single song!
   Because power metal usually have an orchestra play with them, creating powerful sound. The concept in their songs usually related to mythology or epic like knight and dragon. You can link the whole album to a story about a knight going to safe his princess from wicked dragons.
   So, let me introduce some power metal bands around the world!
   First, the Japanese band - Galneryus !  attention!this song has no vocal!but others have!

Progressive Metal!

     Today I am going to talk about Progressive Metal music(前衛金屬). This kind of music is vary different from our daily music. It has complex arranger and odd temple in their songs. Usually, most people who first listen to this kind of music would not like this style.
     Let's start to talk about this kind of amazing music! As I say, it has complex arranger, which means they mix lots of elements into their songs. Maybe in the guitar riff or in the bass riff, even drum solo!  Also, like post rock music, progressive metal often use concept album(概念專輯) to presence their songs, which means the whole album's songs are all related to the same topic, and this is also the reason why the public seldom contact to this kind of songs, because radios or TVs will not spend lot's of time play many songs that all belong to a band! But without appreciating a complete album,  you can't really understand what their music mean! At the same time, to presence a complete story, progressive metal's songs usually up to 8 minutes  or even longer.
     When it comes to progressive metal, Dream Theatre(夢劇場) is the most amazing band that I have ever listened! When you listen to their songs, you can pay your whole attention to the guitar solo, in addition to its incredible skill, their solo include many words!Also, pay attention to their KB(鍵盤), you will be stunned ! Lot's of words I can't tell you until you listen to their songs on your own!

 

Instrument's talk - post rock!

Today I am going to introduce "post rock"  to you guys! Most of this kind of music have no vocal in their songs. Still,  they can tell you what they want to say without vocal. When you listen post rock music, you will "hear" many pictures! Unlike other music, post rock seldom has a single hot song in their albums; they inclined to tell you a story through a whole album. In other words, when you try to understand the meaning of songs, you have to listen the whole album orderly.Another feature of post rock music is that they seldom have solo. Instead, they make their music like a talk among many instruments! Also, the average length of one single is usually up to 7 or 8 minutes, or even longer!

"Sugar Plum Ferry" is my favorite Taiwanese post rock band. Unfortunately, they dismissed few months ago. The song "False awakening" is the most famous song!

Another well-known foreign post rock band I like is "Explosions In The Sky" . Try their songs and I'm sure that you will "hear" many pictures in your brain!

LET'S Djent!

     Today, I am going to introduce you guys a new music style called "djent"!So,why we call it "djent" but not "ajent" or other names ? It initially came from a famous  guitarist of a band called Meshuggah. The sound he makes always like "jent" ,and we also use "djent" to describe a kind of sound that has distinctive high-gain,and low pitch.
Take this video for example, and you will know what I mean.

This kind of music mixes lots of other music style,including progressive metal, power metal,and math rock.Briefly,it has uncommon temple like 7/8beat , 5/8 beat, and they usually convert to another temple during their song! Also,their guitar  use one string to play bass rhythm instead of use power chord! Sounds amazing right?
But,I must apologize to everyone,because last week I made a wrong pronunciation of "djent". It correct pronunciation is "jent"!!

At the end of this article, I also want to introduce you guys a fantastic new Taiwan djent band called "Lyra"!They mix the element of pop music to djent music,and they are the first Taiwan band to do this!Try it and I am sure that you will be crazy about it!
